Becoming a parent for the first time can be understandably daunting. And we’re not talking kids here. Even bringing home a new pet — especially if you’re never owned one before — can be a tad bit overwhelming. And the pressure can multiply if you have no idea what you’re doing.

That’s why Petco is offering educational seminars in January to provide free advice that will help new parents care for their pet’s whole health, including physical, mental, social and emotional well-being.

The seminars include:

  • Skin and Coat Seminars, Jan. 12 to 13: This seminar will teach pet parents how to keep a dog’s skin healthy and coat shiny.
  • Potty Training Seminars, Jan. 5 to 6: Qualified trainers will offer professional advice, tips and tricks to help make potty training easier. Learn how to stimulate pets mentally with positive feedback.
  • Puppy Socialization Seminars, Jan. 19 to 20: This 30-minute constructive playtime is designed to teach social skills to puppies.

For dates and seminars in your area, type in your zip code at Petco.com, click on a location and then click Events.

In addition, Petco is holding its National Adoption Weekend Jan. 5 to 6, where you can meet local shelter pets and find out if pet adoption is a good choice for you and your family. If you’re not sure if becoming a pet parent is the right decision for you, Petco is also offering its Meet the Critters event Jan. 12 to 13 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Owners can also head over to Petco’s website, Petco.com/wholepets, for more information. The site includes advice on owning a dog, cat, small animal, fish, bird and reptile.
