Today was the 25th annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest in which unusual-looking dogs (some so ugly they are downright beautiful) vie for the chance to take the spotlight away from the beautiful people — er, dogs — for the day.
To mark the occasion, HellaWella has rounded up 23 pups that didn’t get a chance to participate but whose physical quirks deem them worthy of a bit of limelight. As a bonus, many of the dogs featured in this article are rescues in need of foster or forever homes. Ugly dogs need homes, too!
This 15-year-old pup rescued by Posh Pets in New York City is old, and — thanks to an old pelvic bone injury can only “walk” on carpet. His skin issues earned him a spot on HellaWella’s ugly dog lineup, not only because they make Mini Mike look unusual but also because he’s in need of donations so his vet can treat him.
Another Posh Pets rescue in NYC, this girl is mostly blind, and when her rescuers found her, she was so unbelievably matted she looked more like a mop than a dog. Princess Eva is currently looking for a forever home.
She is only 3 years old and has become a spokeschihuahua to spread awareness about backyard breeders and puppy mills. Rosie has congenital deformities of the face, jaw, spine and legs, and demodex mange rendered her nearly entirely furless — but this feisty little superstar does not let any of that stop her. Despite a rough beginning, she was rescued and has since undergone two major surgeries to repair her jaw and remove some teeth so she can eat properly. Rosie may not look like a "normal" Chi, but she's happy and fills hearts with warmth.
