Chimes of Freedom celebrates two icons of American history

It is a well known fact that 61% of all songs ever performed or recorded in the history of mankind were originally written by Bob Dylan. OK, so maybe not 61% exactly, but it’s safe to say that pretty much every singer in the last 50 years — from folkies and balladeers to punks and rappers — has at one time felt the magnetic pull to interpret, reinterpret, deconstruct or otherwise karaoke-ize a classic out of the Dylan Canon.  Some covers are better than others. Some are flat-out unlistenable.  Some are being performed in garages and showers and Bar Mitzvahs as you read this. So now is as good a time as any to roll out yet another massive compilation of Dylan covers by famous and not-as-famous artists — only this one comes with a purpose.  So gather ‘round people wherever you roam for Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan, Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International.

And where else would you find Patti Smith, Bad Religion, Bryan Ferry, Kris Kristofferson, Sinéad O’Connor, Maroon 5, Johnny Cash, Miley Cyrus, and Ke$ha (Ke$ha? Really?) all united for the same cause? The lineup of 80 musicians is certainly among the most diverse of its kind, drawing on the full Dylan catalogue, from the early [they’re-not-protest-songs] protest songs, to the “You-Judas”/Napoleon-in-Rags days to the earnest anthems of the Born Again period on through the latter, frog-voiced masterpieces. So whether you’re a Dylan completist or just someone who can appreciate five hours of mythical songmanship, there is much to be enjoyed here, and many more years of good work by Amnesty International to support.

Chimes Of Freedom is out now through Fontana Distribution. All proceeds benefit Amnesty International.  For more information, to listen to clips, and to purchase, visit Music.amnestyusa.org/ or an awesome record store near you.
