The coolest new kitchen gadget: Food Huggers

Food Huggers have taken Kickstarter by storm — with only 65 hours left to go, the project had far surpassed its original goal of $26,000 and was quickly approaching its new goal of $160,000.

These colorful little silicone "hugs" keep halves of produce fresh and prevent you from spending money on (and throwing away) all those little plastic baggies you currently use to wrap your half-used fruits and vegetables. All you have to do is place any fruit or vegetable half on top of the hugger and gently press down — it pops into place, and the silicone creates a snug fit to prevent air from reaching the exposed side of the produce and spoiling it. Additionally, the seal locks in odors so the rest of your fridge doesn't smell like, say, raw onion.

Food Huggers come in four sizes, and each size accommodates a wide range of produce shapes. They even have a special avocado hugger to accommodate the pit. Bonus purpose: You can use it to cover opened cans too.

The huggers are 100% BPA- and phthalate-free, dishwasher-safe, microwave-safe and freezer-safe — and they're super easy to store since they fit inside each other.

The project's 30-day campaign ends on July 13, and the creators have so far raised $145,483 of their $160,000 goal. Pitch in to help make this awesome kitchen gadget become a reality by visiting its Kickstarter page and donating $1 or more to the project.
