Eco-friendly makeup tips to help you beat the humidity this summer

Don’t you just love when you venture outside in the summer and your face begins to melt? First, the telltale black mascara smudges. Then, the magical disappearing blush! Finally, rivulets of the silky liquid formerly known as foundation race down your face. Let’s not forget the additional sweat mixing with this cosmetic ooze clogging up your pores, leading to acne you haven’t seen since puberty. Not cute. Warm weather and sunny days are fantastic for shaking off the winter blues and enjoying the outdoors, but the heat and humidity also require you to retool your beauty routine. Go back to basics with environmentally friendly cosmetics that are kind to your skin and the planet.

Cover your bases

Summer is the season of the BB cream. It provides more coverage than the average tinted moisturizer without completely masking your skin and has the added benefit of sun protection. While it is long-lasting, it also lends itself to reapplication to keep up the sun protection all day long.

Since my initial BB Cream report for HellaWella, the beauty aisles have been inundated with BB creams. Sheer coverage doesn’t get more natural than Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin All-In-1 Balm, which contains 70 percent organic ingredients, and, at $14.95, it’s one of the more affordable natural makeup options on the market. This cream melts into skin without melting off your face, is light enough for buildable coverage, moisturizes with organic coconut and jojoba oils, soothes with organic beeswax and has SPF 20. And I thought I was a multi-tasker! When I wear this, blemishes, bumps and redness disappear but my freckles, which I adore, are still fully visible.

My one gripe with this cream is that it only comes in Light and Light/Medium shades. The Light/Medium works for my skin, which tends to fall on the golden beige range of the foundation spectrum, but I have to be very precise with my blending. Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45, which is not organic but relies on mineral sunscreens for its SPF power, is similarly limited, though the Medium/Deep shade is a bit more flexible. Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream comes in a diverse range of shades to suit a variety of skin tones. At $48, it’s not exactly cheap, but it contains antioxidants, is water resistant for up to 40 minutes and has SPF 25. It’s also vegan.

Sometimes, if I’m going for a more sophisticated look, I dust on BareMinerals Mineral Veil, a lovely setting powder that adds the perfect finishing touch to your look. The illuminating formula adds radiance, while the tinted formula gives a bit more warmth. BareMinerals also makes blushes and bronzers for weightless color.

The eyes have it

The first thing that seems to fall apart on hot, humid days is eye makeup, so primer is essential for shadow and liner that stay put. Vasanti All-Star 2-in-1 Face and Eye Primer is free of parabens and oil, leaving a smooth base that will keep your makeup right where you put it all day.

Natural mascaras are a bit trickier. Finding an affordable natural formula that resists smudging is near impossible, but Physicians Formula has struck gold with Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Fakeout Mascara, which contains lash extension fibers made from a completely natural blend of nylon, silk cotton powder and pine tree fibers. The thick, dense brush pumps up even the puniest lashes, while organic beeswax helps to prevent clumping and allows smooth application. Best of all, it’s strong enough for all-day wear but washes off easily with soap and water or makeup remover, so no pulling or tugging is necessary. Oh, and did I mention, it retails for a paltry $9.95? Pure cosmetic awesomeness. It’s not as resilient as waterproof mascaras, but it’s inexpensive, gentle, holds up well in the heat and makes my lashes look amazing. That’s a winner in my book!

A pout that pops

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar is long lasting, highly pigmented lip color that adds some fun to your look. Thanks to OCC, no hue is off limits, from Rollergirl, an intense lavender and Pool Boy, a shocking aqua, to more traditional shades such as Electric Grandma, a quintessential shimmery summer coral. Lip Tar is made with eco-friendly ingredients like hydrating hemp oil and peppermint oil, a natural preservative. For extra staying power, prime your pout with OCC Lip Tar Primer or OCC Cosmetics Colour Pencil in Trick, a neutral beige. OCC products are not only ridiculously fun, they are also vegan and cruelty-free.
