An eye for good health

As long as we can see, we tend to take our eyes for granted. But healthy eyes aren’t a given — there’s plenty you can be doing to prevent vision loss and other infections or ailments.

Eat for health
Luckily, your eyes need a lot of the same nutrients as the rest of your body, such as vitamins A, C and E, and antioxidants like carotenoids (found in yellow and orange veggies and leafy greens). Cold-water fish, such as tuna, mackerel and cod are recommended for dry eyes.

Put on protective glasses
Nope, they’re not very stylish, but protective eyewear is absolutely essential anytime you’re dealing with dust (including sawdust), chemicals and even some sports.

Wear sunglasses all year
Exposing your peepers to UV rays can cause skin cancer around the eyes (where skin is especially susceptible), cataracts and macular degeneration. And even during the winter, the sun’s rays can be pretty serious.

Deal with dry eyes
The most likely causes are environmental — such as staring at a computer screen or standing at a cold and windy bus stop. Dryness is also a common side effect of many medications but could indicate more severe issues. If your eyes are chronically dry and over-the-counter eye drops aren’t cutting it, it’s worth seeing a doctor.

Some other potential sources of eye injury?
Think champagne corks, cooking with oil or boiling water, fireworks and falls onto the sharp corner of furniture. If you do injure your eyes, flush out any chemicals with water, but don’t touch, rub, try to remove objects or apply any medications.
