Any frequent traveler has experienced the mad dash craziness of a busy airport — you juggle your driver’s license, your bags, taking your shoes off and on. It’s no wonder when you have a short amount of time, you tend to grab the easiest, quickest thing to eat at the airport. But sometimes, the easiest, quickest thing can be healthy, believe it or not.

At the end of 2014, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine ranked the 10 best airports for finding healthy food — No. 1 on the list was Baltimore/Washington International Airport, followed by Seattle-Tacoma, Los Angeles, Ronald Reagan Washington National and Newark Liberty, to round out the Top 5.

So we scoured their restaurant offerings to find you one or two dishes to aim for when you stop through these airports.


1. BWI

One of the top picks DC-Eater.com has for this airport is California Tortilla, and with an array of choices under 500 calories, we can see why. The Southwestern Salad and Caribbean Mango Salad come in at 417 and 477 calories, respectively. The California Sunset Bowl with mesquite chicken, rice, spinach, beans and avocado is just 480 calories. A cup of the tortilla soup comes in at 204 calories. (Concourse A/B)


2. SEA

If sushi is your jam, head to Maki of Japan for California rolls and more, all which ring in under 500 calories per roll. The bourbon chicken, one of the signature dishes, is just 240 calories, and Maki noodles are 310. (Central Terminal)


3. LAX

For breakfast, there’s one sure dish to seek out, and that’s the egg white frittata at III Forks Steakhouse. With mushrooms, roasted red peppers, spinach and feta cheese, there’s no better way to start your travel day. For lunch, seek out James’ Beach and go for any of the salads, the grilled Mahi Mahi tacos or the Swimsuit Special: grilled chicken, Mahi Mahi or tofu steamed veg, brown rice and gazpacho salsa. 4. DCA

A safe bet for lunch or dinner at this D.C. airport is Qdoba, thanks to Knockout Tacos, which are under 300 calories a piece. You can build your own burritos, bowls, salads and more — one sample of a taco salad with the crispy flour tortilla, black bean salsa, sour cream and ranch comes in at 600 calories. Save a little by choosing sour cream or ranch, then add chicken for protein and the same calorie total. Another option: Cosi, where the bowls range from 390 to 556 calories, and a small vanilla latte is 203 calories. (both in the National Hall)


5. EWR

Newark Liberty International Airport has a standout when it comes to the usual sandwich — the Earl of Sandwich. And just like it’s lofty namesake, the offerings are royal, with a quinoa chicken salad (290 calories), a BBQ chicken flatbread at (360 calories) and a turkey wrap (370 calories). (Terminal A)
