Yup, you read that right. If you are a resident of New York City, you can pick up your very own free tree this month.
Beginning Oct. 13, if you are a homeowner in NYC, you can stop by various events around the five boroughs to pick up your free tree to plant in a yard, garden, community garden or anywhere else you think would benefit from a new tree.
The New York Restoration Project, which is running the program, expects to give out a total of 1,400 trees. During pickup events, an NYRP rep will be on site to explain how to plant and care for the tree.
The giveaways are part of the MillionTreesNYC initiative, a program launched in 2007 with a goal to plant and care for 1 million new trees across the city’s five boroughs by 2017. So far, more than 612,000 trees have been planted.
