Is your beach up to eco-snuff?
The weather’s increasingly heating up and a great way to cool down is a nice dip in the ocean. But before you don your swimsuit or trunks to hit the shore, view the Natural Resources Defense Council’s ratings of popular U.S. beaches to find out if your favorite spot keeps bacterial pollution — the nasty stuff you can’t see — in check.
The best beaches are the ones that test their waters more than once a week, letting you know when bacteria levels go beyond what’s considered healthy, and do a good job of informing you via postings online and at the beach when it’s unsafe to splash around in the water.
Swimming around in polluted waters can lead to some gnarly illnesses, including skin rashes, pinkeye and hepatitis, so be sure to look up your beach before heading out for that refreshing dunk.
