If you want to make an impact, how about potato chips and the large size bags of these. After frying, I think the nutritional value of these delectable treats may be close to zero. If you want to fight obesity, I am thinking limitations on the size of the bags or elimination of these as a choice may be more effective.

If you don't want your children to drink large amounts of soda then teach them not to. How is this idiotic ban going to be enforced? Soda cops? We have enough intrusive legislation, we certainly do NOT need more. Government, you are NOT my mama so STOP trying to be her.

I'm all about freedom of choice but unfortunately children don't know that a 40 ounce soda is not a serving if that is what they are served. The other day I ordered a 'medium' drink with my meal and it was 32 ounces!!!! I know that is ridiculous and too much because I remember a time when serving sizes were appropriate. But a child who has grown up their whole life and been served a huge soda with their meal has no idea that is wrong and not appropriate. I think we owe it to our children and our future to be responsible and set a good example. Don't believe me? Sit in on some of my sessions. I am a dietitian and counsel obese children who are not even teenagers yet and are facing the chronic illnesses typically associated with old age (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol). That is sad and a sad legacy for us to leave to our future generations.

Where does it end then? Next the donuts will have to be smaller, the burgers, the fries portion. Where is the personal responsibility in all this? The nanny syndrome needs to stop. Where is the education in mandates? Postings and size changes don't educate ! For a change why not start taxing and removing remote controls from everyone's beloved gadgets? How about if computers can only work if you pedal them for power. Get up and move! Also on the cost point... there are insurance programs that reward good BMI's and charge accordingly for higher ones. They also have educational elements that show you the way to a lower BMI and the incentive is lower rates.

Why don't we just not allow fat people to eat? Sounds like just as good of an idea of banning sodas. It's not the sodas that make people fat, it's the people!!!! Plan and simple. And why stop at sodas? Why not make a healthy eating plan and make people only stay on the plan or else? Pretty stupid right? Banning sodas, pretty stupid!!!!

As for the tax increase....would the tax be fair? I thought I saw somewhere that taxes on soda and junk food and the like would hit the poorest americans the hardest...I don't know if it is true but it does seem to make some sense.

I think this is great, but I think the legislation has little chance for passing or enforcement. I'm glad that "contriversial" like this is being attempted, it brings the issue into the forefront. Good Job MB and thanks Melissa for reporting on it!
