Sometimes we need a little incentive to make healthy decisions — for ourselves and the environment. With that fact in mind, Recyclebank works its green magic by rewarding eco warriors with points to earn discounts, free offers, gift cards and donations simply for making green choices, such as recycling and using less water.
The company recently partnered with Preserve, a sustainable consumer goods company, to promote participation in its Preserve Gimme 5 Program, which is a “consumer-powered recycling system that provides expanded recycling options for #5 plastics and empowers recyclers to drive systemic change in our country’s recycling system.”
Simply bring your #5 plastic recyclables — which include bottle caps; food containers, such as yogurt, deli foods and ketchup; and medicine bottles and containers — to participating retail locations, and Preserve will recycle them and turn them into other household products.
Better yet, Preserve has launched a free iPhone app to help you find the nearest #5 collection area and earn Recyclebank points for rewards.
Polypropylene, or #5 plastic, is a plastic used in products and packaging. Although it makes up 25% of plastic used every year, less than 5% is collected for recycling in the United States. Thank to Gimme 5, consumers have dropped off more than 200 tons of recycled yogurt cups, hummus and cottage cheese containers at the more than 240 Whole Foods Market stores and select independent cooperative markets across the United States.
