The Turkey Trot, a truly themed 5k run. While the name sounds kind of stupid, it could be the best way to kick a newbie’s running goals up a notch. Usually taking place around or on Thanksgiving, the Turkey Trot is a 5K fun run that brings families and communities outside to celebrate the holiday the healthy way — running 3.1 miles (in a silly turkey hat, if you choose).

Don't know where to begin? The American Council on Exercise is offering a free eight-week 5K training program on its website. Visit ACEfitness.org, and they’ll hook you up with a wealth of information and tools to keep you on track on a daily basis. You can even chat with other newbies about your progress.

ACE says that a Thanksgiving dinner could pack as much as 4,000 calories, so a morning run will fire up your metabolism for the day. Bring family members along, and you’ll be inspiring others to live an active, healthy lifestyle.
