Spring necessitates a change in wardrobe, in part because of changing weather, but mostly because fit fashionistas get a chance to play with all the delicious spring fashion trends. Sporty styles are still relevant in high fashion — witness Joe Fresh’s Spring Spirit of Sport campaign featuring Karlie Kloss in athletic-inspired separates — but the real excitement comes from innovative interpretations of trends by athletic apparel designers who realize that a stylish sweat session is a must for many of us who work out, especially those of us who end up spending a good portion of our time in sports bras, shorts and sweats.

That '70s show

Wide-legged pants. Opulent prints. Culottes. Yes, dear reader, the 1970s are back, and athletic gear is trending in a big way. Onzie apparel, a brand based in Los Angeles whose focus is breathable yoga wear, has the look and feel of '70s opulence down with their stunning selection of relaxed fit pants in prints such as the Onziekaleidoscopic Lotus that are reminiscent of Louis Vuitton’s lush graphics for spring. Onzie plays beautifully with proportion, from full length palazzo pants and their Pura Vida split leg style to their cropped pants that reign in the volume and hug just below the calf, all of which are made to promote comfort and movement on the mat. Whatever style you choose, balance your bottom with a fitted top such as Onzie’s Sun Ray Bra Top, which adds interest with intricate back detail but doesn’t overwhelm the print. If you want to try similar ‘70’s pattern play in leggings, check out Lineagewear’s super cool Peacock Leggings, available in blue and green. Lineagewear is the brainchild of Katie Pippin, who uses her expertise as a former Broadway costume builder to make leggings that can withstand even the most intense workout and are designed to eradicate muffin top and camel toe. Best of all, Lineagewear leggings range in size from X-Small to 3X.

Forward march

This season, military style has become sophisticated and, in some cases, downright sexy, as evidenced in the April 2015 cover of Vogue España featuring fashion blogger Chiara Ferragni, creator of popular blog The Blonde OiselleSalad, in a sleek khaki-and-olive combo that’s more high style than boot camp. Meanwhile, Marc Jacobs has created a collection of military inspired dresses ranging from austere maxi skirt length to flirty minis adorned with cheeky oversized pockets and buttons. Add this look to your fitness gear repertoire with the gorgeous Yoga Shorts from Adidas by Stella McCartney or Oiselle’s Embossed Pockito Shorts with mesh pocket detail, perfect for layering on top of running tights now and great on their own for when temperatures soar. Complete the look with Oiselle’s Wingly Tank, an elevated version of your typical sweat-wicking tank with an asymmetrical mesh overlay. Men, you have some great military-style options as well. I love the fun camo on this Poler Cozy Stuff Crew Neck Sweatshirt; it’s breathable and helps keep moisture at bay. If you want to go all out, try the matching Poler Cozy Stuff Sweatshort.

Fit florals

Big, audacious blooms are everywhere this season, from Alexander McQueen’s floral fantasy dresses to Céline’s darling daisy prints. Athletic apparel brands are in on the trend, particularly Adidas by Stella McCartney. I love how strategically Adidas by Stella McCartneyplaced petals create a sweetheart neckline effect on the Yoga Seamless Tank. McCartney adds texture to activewear with the tonal Essentials Floral Track Jacket, which also features a beautiful funnel neck and a cropped silhouette. Then there’s the black-and-white allover floral print, available on items including the Weekender Backpack, in case you were looking for a new gym bag, a Swim Rashguard for those of you getting your surf on and a Run Sweatshirt for outdoor sweat sessions. I am living for the Run Printed Climastorm Shell Shorts. The mesh! The high waist! The painterly floral overlay! Perfection. Oh, you want to mix your florals? Then check out the Run Light Jacket, which combines black and white floral print sleeves with the painterly floral for a piece that is both elegant and playful. Ladies who fit sizes 14 and up can try the black and white floral motif with Livi Active’s Signature Stretch Floral Capri Legging, or go for technicolor funk with Lineagewear’s trippy Dragonflower Leggings. Men, don’t feel left out! Your workout wardrobe can bloom, too, with the colorful Vans Woodberry Jacket and H&M’s leaf print Running Shorts. Bonus: the running shorts are made with recycled polyester, so they are eco-friendly, too!
