One organization is taking the concept of “think globally, act locally,” to a new level by encouraging people around the world to do their part to make the Earth a little cleaner.

Let’s Do It World has launched a global campaign to make the world a cleaner place in 2012 by asking citizens of every nation to help get rid of the tons of illegal garbage that line city streets, beaches, oceans and forests. Teams from Afghanistan to Ukraine have already signed up to participate in cleanup events taking place from March 24 to Sept. 25. In the United States, teams have formed in San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., so there are plenty of locations that still need your help. Click here to find out how you can put your city on the map.

Speaking of maps, in order to clean up your city or town, you have to know where to find the garbage. Let’s Do It World has got you covered with an app that lets you map illegal waste using your android phone or iPhone. Data you collect will be loaded onto the World Waste Map, helping groups around the world target waste locations and streamline cleanup efforts. Click here to download the app.

Tell us, will you participate in a cleanup event in your city?
