It does nix the fried onions, but the topping of shallots, breadcrumbs, Romano cheese, thyme and olive oil works just fine.

With a few simple ingredient swaps, you can take your holiday menu from heavyweight to healthy weight.

The holidays are approaching once again, and we are faced with diet dilemmas everywhere we turn. So how to celebrate the deliciousness without the pounds? We have good news for you — with a few simple ingredient swaps, you can take your holiday menu from heavyweight to healthy weight!

You may be wary to bring a new dish into holiday traditions, but a few changes to your signature meal can cut down the waistline and add to the merriment! Here are three easy swaps for your meal prep this season.

Avoid extra salt! Steer clear of packaged salt seasonings — go for fresh flavors. Instead of garlic salt in your mashed potatoes, try a fresh clove. Splurge a little on kitchen time; go au naturale with your seasonings for a stronger flavor and healthier dish!

A sprinkle less sugar! In your next batch of baked goods, try reducing the sugar by one half. To keep it sweet, add vanilla, nutmeg or cinnamon. Try this out on a winter-inspired spice cake.

Choose your fruit wisely! Fruit desserts can be sweet and light, but beware of hidden canned extras. Avoid fruit canned in heavy syrup — try fruit canned in its own juices or water. As always, fresh fruit is the best for you, and usually the best tasting as well!

Keep these tips in mind as you plan for you holiday meals. It’s a new food generation — leave your mark on this season in a slightly healthier style.

Chocolate dipped goodies

(Recipe courtesy of Country Living)
Dip store-bought pretzels or peppermint sticks into melted chocolate, let them dry and then wrap them up in a cute holiday box! Choose dark chocolate for added antioxidants.

12 (5-inch) peppermint sticks or pretzels

7 ounces of dark chocolate, melted

Dip peppermint sticks or pretzels, one at a time, into melted chocolate. Transfer to a baking pan lined with parchment paper. Allow chocolate to set slightly, about 5 minutes. Roll chocolate end of peppermint sticks in nonpareils. Return to lined pan and let stand at room temperature until chocolate hardens.

Holiday granola mix

(Recipe courtesy of Country Living)
A delicious and nutritious holiday gift! Invest in a few cute containers and ribbons for a gorgeous gift for all of your office pals.

18 ounces of old-fashioned oats

8 ounces of sliced almonds

1 cup of dried cranberries

1 cup of chopped dried apricots

1 cup of light brown sugar

1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1 1/2 sticks of unsalted of butter

1/2 cup of honey

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, toss together all ingredients except butter and honey. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt unsalted butter. Stir in honey. Pour over oat mixture and toss to distribute. Spread granola onto a parchment lined baking pan and bake, stirring occasionally, until oats are toasted and sugar begins to caramelize, 35 to 40 minutes. Cool completely on pan. Transfer to an airtight container.

The slides below feature three do-it-yourself ornaments, three gift-wrapping ideas and three other unique and incredibly easy projects that can help you decorate your home this Christmas.

Whether they were excited, irritated, scared or all of the above, Cyber Monday and Black Friday shoppers talked about it online — and business management software company SAP took all of those social media analytics and put them in one, big, pretty infographic.

“The Holiday Shopper Sentiment Report: Black Friday and Cyber Monday Consumer Face-Off” took a look at what shoppers were saying and how they felt about their hunt for holiday bargains during that Friday and following Monday.

The results: More people were talking about their shopping endeavors on Black Friday, but Cyber Monday shoppers were MUCH happier with their experience — which isn’t shocking since waiting in lines for hours in the cold November air, then packing like sardines into store aisles and fighting a crazed mom for the last Furby (yes, those are back) isn’t really anyone’s idea of a good time.

Did you brave the crowds last Friday or shop the Web on Monday? Check out the infographic below to find out how your experience compared with that of your fellow shoppers’. (Click the image below for a larger view, or click here for the PDF.)

We often scold ourselves after overindulging on Thanksgiving, believing it will help restore our healthy habits. But is feeling guilty actually harming your health?

It’s easy to overindulge at your Thanksgiving feast. Maybe you chose mashed potatoes over green beans, or two pieces of pie instead of one. The feeling of guilt comes naturally — the problem is where the guilt will take us.

We often scold ourselves, believing it will help restore our healthy habits. But is feeling guilty actually harming your health?

A study published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology reported that individuals who indulged without guilt were less likely to continue unhealthy eating habits. And if they had feelings of self-compassion, individuals had less stress and felt less restrained regarding eating habits. If you’re feeling guilty after your holiday indulgence, remind yourself that one day of food and family isn’t the end of the world. Shedding guilt could mean shedding pounds!

Try these tips for avoiding holiday guilt that could lead to more unhealthy eating:

If you normally track your food intake, give yourself a day off for family time — just eat until you’re full.

Savor your meal. It’s not every day you get to enjoy home-cooked dishes, so make each one count by eating slowly and appreciating it.

When you eat leftovers, remember it’s not Thanksgiving all over again; choose one or two things instead of recreating your feast-day plate.

Reinvent your leftovers — make turkey into a salad topper or combine it with veggies for a soup or stew. If you’re looking for ideas, try HellaWella’s top 11 healthy ways to eat your leftover turkey.

Family gatherings are best enjoyed with a delicious alcoholic beverage that both warms you up during those chilly holiday months and helps you tolerate that particularly irritating aunt or uncle.

When it comes to hot cocktails, you’re usually looking at not-so-healthy amounts of fat and/or sugar. We’re not going to pretend you’re the Mother Teresa of dieting. It’s the holidays; we all deserve a little indulgence. Just remember to keep it in moderation. These drinks aren’t insanely high in fat, but many of them do, unfortunately, have significant amounts of sugar. Keep it in perspective, and remember to factor in that slice of pecan pie if you’re also planning on sipping on a glass of mulled wine.

Photo: Williams-Sonoma.com

Hot buttered rum

As you probably guessed from the name, hot buttered rum isn’t the kind of drink you’ll find in a diet book — but there are ways to tweak the traditional recipe for a concoction surprisingly low in fat and sugar. Williams-Sonoma did just that with this recipe, which cuts back on the heaps of butter and brown sugar found in most hot buttered rum recipes. Break out the mugs, nutmeg and cinnamon sticks and get in the holiday spirit!

Hot juju ginger apple cider

Photo: FoodRepublic.com

It sounds weird, but it turns out Jujubes are great for spiking apple cider. Let the kids have some of the candy and use the rest for the adults! This recipe from Food Republic makes Jujube syrup with Jujubes and simple syrup, and then combines it with apple cider, King’s Ginger Liqueur (infused with mandarin peels), black tea, crab apples, dried mandarins, allspice and a cinnamon stick. While low in fat, this recipe does not spare any sugar, so consider it dessert!

Photo: Oprah.com

Oprah’s Cupid’s Kiss cocktail

Like Tokyo Terrace’s Peppermint Schnapps hot chocolate (see recipe below), this Oprah recipe puts an adult twist on the chocolaty drink, combining it with Irish cream liqueur, dark crème de cocoa, amaretto, whipped cream and a Hershey’s kiss. Make sure to use low-fat milk!

Silk Irish coffee

Photo: DrOz.com

We wouldn’t call it “low in sugar,” but this Dr. Oz recipe for Silk Irish coffee contains less of the sweet stuff than many of today’s popular hot cocktails. “Silk” in the name comes from the recipe’s use of the Silk brand of soymilk, and it’s mixed with steaming coffee, Irish whiskey, a touch of dark brown sugar and some whipped cream. At least we have one reason to appreciate winter.

Photo: catfordCelt on Flickr

Espresso martini

We imagine James Bond would sip on one of these during the colder months. Simple to make and low in both fat and sugar, this espresso martini recipe from Food Republic uses only three ingredients: Belvedere vodka, coffee liqueur and Woolloomooloo espresso — though we’re sure any espresso would do. Move aside, olives; coffee beans are the martini’s new best friend.

Mulled wine

Photo: Anna Williams; Styling: Deborah Williams

Don’t mourn the loss of summer’s Sangria. Fall has its own yummy wine punch: mulled wine. This particular recipe, from Real Simple, uses a navel orange, apple juice, honey and berries for sweetness and spices it up with fresh ginger and cinnamon sticks. If this doesn’t make you fall in love with fall, nothing will.

Photo: TokyoTerrace.com

Hot chocolate with Peppermint Schnapps

As the website says, this drink is probably best enjoyed in December while listening to Ella Fitzgerald’s Christmas album, but feel free to make it on any chilly day that calls for a good cocktail. The recipe admirably calls for homemade hot chocolate made from grated dark chocolate — none of this Swiss Miss foolishness! — and adds milk, vanilla extract, Peppermint Schnapps and some whipped cream and crushed peppermint candy for garnish. You’ll be humming “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” by the time you reach the bottom of the mug.

Tom and Jerry

Photo: AllYou.com

A cousin of eggnog, the Tom and Jerry is a traditional Christmastime cocktail typically made with egg whites, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, rum and nutmeg. (Fun fact: The drink has nothing to do with the cartoon; the name is a reference to a book and stage play written by the drink’s creator, Pierce Egan.) This Tom and Jerry recipe from All You uses all the traditional ingredients and unfortunately clocks in around 250 calories — don’t plan on seconds.

Photo: FitSugar.com

Healthy hot toddy

A wintertime classic, the hot toddy is made with liquor, water, sugar and spices. This awesome recipe from FitSugar uses brandy, scotch or bourbon; hot water; honey; lemon juice; a cinnamon stick; and lemon for garnish. The best part: This version is unusually low in fat and sugar compared with many hot alcoholic beverages.

Hot apple martini

Photo: IfYouCanMakeThatYouCanMakeThis.com

We love this recipe from If You Can Make That You Can Make This — mainly because it’s so ridiculously easy and the sugar at least comes from something healthy (i.e., apple juice). All you need is vanilla vodka, apple juice and a cinnamon stick. Heat the apple juice with the cinnamon stick until it’s steaming hot; then pour in the vanilla vodka. Voila! (Bonus: The recipe page also includes a recipe for cheddar cheese apple tart.)

Honey almond cake
Rosh Hashana greetings commonly include wishes for a “sweet New Year,” so it’s no surprise that honey shows up in so many holiday dishes. And while honey may not be the healthiest ingredient in the world, it offers much more in the way of nutrition than ordinary table sugar. With the added bonus of almonds, this cake from Eating Well is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Fish head soup
Rosh Hashana in English translates to “head of the year,” so it makes sense that many adventurous observers will consume the head of a fish to mark the New Year. This fish head soup recipe from Serious Eats calls for the use of salmon, which is known to be a good source of healthy fats, vitamin B12 and selenium.

Spinach and pomegranate salad
Eating pomegranates has become a popular tradition on Rosh Hashana, as the fruit fulfills the mitzvah or commandment of eating a “new fruit,” or a fruit not yet eaten this season, and is said to contain the same number of seeds, 613, as there are commandments in the Jewish bible. Aside from the religious significance, pomegranates offer quite the nutritional punch; just one fruit provides 58% of your daily vitamin K needs.

Staying fit while we’re on a New York City vacation is hard enough. Add in a major holiday like Christmas, Hanukkah or New Years and we got ourselves a problem. With so much to see, do and eat, exercise can easily fall off the itinerary. HellaWella found a unique way to stay fit and enjoy the city that never sleeps at the same time.

Central Park Fitness Tours offers customized guided fitness training tours in one of NYC’s major attractions and fitness hubs: Central Park. Veteran personal trainer and founder Patrick Populorum uses his theater and stand-up comedy background and Central Park know-how to entertain and enlighten as you work up a sweat.

“Each tour is customized for your fitness needs. I do walking tours, running tours, cross training tours, crazy fitness freak tours,” Populorum explained. “I guarantee people will finish the tour with new exercise ideas, a respectable understanding of the narrative of Central Park from conception to present day and a few funny stories to take home with them! Also, if they’re good, I may do a Shakespeare monologue or an Ogden Nash poem.”

Populorum wants you involved in the conversation. Feel free to point out things you find interesting so that he can add it into his narrative.

So where do you go on this Fitness Tour? Some of the spots include:

North Woods Tour: This cross-fit training tour spans 96th to 110th streets and offers a rugged and scenic tour of the park’s north end.

Center of the City Tour: Check out the Central Park’s most iconic landmarks while getting a rigorous resistance tour. Cross the same famous finish line as the runners of the New York City Marathon!

The Ramble Tour: Immersed in woods, this rugged terrain offers the most challenging workout for cross-country running along the trails and fun cross-fit training at Summit Rock.

“The park is just too big to cover in a day,” Populorum explained. “I basically divide the park into four quadrants and cover as much ground as we can in an hour and a half.”

Central Park is made up of a whopping 843 acres, so no Fitness Tour is alike. Grab some friends and take the tour twice. Populorum said each tour is unique depending on the people. “Some groups really get into the exercises, some the history; some end up dancing with the street performers,” he said.

Skip the horse and carriage ride
“I can’t say you will be holding hands, snuggling and kissing on my tour, but I promise you will burn some big calories so that you can feel better about going out to one Manhattan’s fattening restaurants,” Populorum said. “Also, it is not always pleasant being downwind of a horse.”

So true.
