Turn on your healing power: A guide to chiropractic

Are you ready to have your power turned on? Do you even know what I am referring to? I can assure you that it has nothing to do with your electric bill. Rather, I’m talking about that innate healing potential you have within your body—is yours turned on? So I guess a better question to have asked would have read something to the affect: Is your body functioning at 100%, 100% of the time? Take a minute to think about this. When was the last time you checked to see that you were functioning at your best, and more importantly, where would you go to find out? The answer to that question is simple: you go to see a chiropractor.

There is a huge misconception out there when it comes to chiropractic. Most people think that we solely take care of patients with neck and low back pain. While we do get great results with these patients, the bigger picture and the mechanism by which the pain is reduced, happens when nerve interference is removed. As a chiropractor, my job is to locate, remove and correct what is called a vertebral subluxation. Please allow me to explain what that even means. A subluxation happens when there is interference, or pressure occurring anywhere in the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and the spinal nerves). This interference can happen when spinal bones move out of alignment. You may now be wondering, what would cause this interference in the first place? The answer my friends, is stress. Not only can physical stress (such as birth trauma, falls, accidents or football tackles), but emotional and chemical stress can affect spinal alignment and function as well.

The brain sends messages down the spinal cord and then out the spinal nerves (passing between each vertebra) to every organ, tissue and cell in your body. For instance, if there happens to be irritation to the nerves leaving the spine around the mid-back, you may experience some digestive issues. Think about this one for a minute, do you think you would digest the healthy salad you had for lunch optimally if you have irritation or pressure to the nerves going to your stomach? The answer is obvious, of course not!

So, now we’ve established that nerve interference can disrupt communication between the brain and the rest of the body. This then begins to affect function of our organs, tissues and cells, which in turn affect overall body function. So you see chiropractic works under the premise that the body has an innate healing potential. Each time you see a chiropractor, we locate and then remove the nerve interference though gentle adjustments. This allows the brain and body to reconnect and to begin healing from above, down and from the inside, out. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather rely on the inherent recuperative healing power within my body, than turn to a pill or potion to keep me at my best.
