The ultimate guide to beer and ice cream pairings

Need another reason to eat a healthier diet and really watch what you eat every day? When you indulge in decadent treats once in a blue moon it won’t completely derail all your efforts. And let’s face it, wherever you stand on the “should there be cheat days” debate, somebody somewhere (including you!) is going to have a birthday or a celebration of some sort where there will be cake, cookies or ice cream.

For many, this Sunday may be one of those days. If you’re planning to celebrate with Dad this weekend, then here’s a treat that will leave most everyone happy. It’s only the ultimate ice cream float. Instead of soda, you use beer. Mmm, beer.

“At first glance, you may not think of pairing beer and ice cream together, but once people have a chance to taste these combinations, they will see how well the different flavors complement one another,” said John Holl, editor of All About Beer Magazine. “Beer has diverse flavors thanks to its main ingredients: water, malt, hops, and yeast. Then, when brewers add culinary ingredients like coffee, fresh fruit, spices and more, the pairing options with ice cream become truly endless. Working with a variety of flavors, we looked to match complementary flavors and intensity, and coax out some nuances from both the beer and the ice cream.”

We’re game. As long as we get back to our regularly scheduled healthy lifestyle first thing Monday, of course.
