The gluten-free craze is full steam ahead. And luckily for those with celiac disease, that’s a good thing. But let’s take it one step further. There are actually beauty and skin products that have zero gluten. The question is: Do you really need them?
According to Celiac Disease Foundation medical advisory member Dr. John Zone, gluten cannot be absorbed through your scalp or skin. If you have celiac disease, gluten can affect you if it’s ingested. So lipstick and other lip products should be gluten-free, we well as dental products, such as toothpaste and mouthwash.
However, some choose to go gluten-free all the way — this includes other cosmetics and bathing/skin products — for personal reasons or for wheat allergies. According to Dr. Michael Picco, answering a question on MayoClinic.com, it is possible to develop a skin reaction to skin care products with gluten if you have an allergy to wheat or another grain.
Even if you don’t have celiac disease or a wheat allergy, it can’t hurt to stock up on gluten-free products should you choose to for personal reasons. After all, most of them are all-natural, so you’ll eliminate the chemicals you find in other products.
